As someone who enjoys your blog, I promise that I am in no way trying to be rude, but I was curious as to what makes you think Lilly will suddenly fall out of fashion? Aside from the brand's hiatus from 1984-1993, Lilly Pulitzer products have been preppy staples, especially for women, for more than fifty years. I confess that I would be surprised to see dresses worn by Jackie Kennedy and still worn today go off the preppy radar.
Do me a favor here quickly. Google image search “Jackie Kennedy Lilly Pulitzer” or “Jackie O Lilly Pulitzer.” I think what you will find (as i found) by doing this, is that the dresses being blogged and tumbled by a lot of the preppy blogs today look nothing like the simply beautiful and fitted dresses worn by the First Lady back in the day. The dresses being blogged today are simply loud and in your face — bright shades of Pink and Green, canary yellows, cerulean blues, etc. (the dresses today don’t seem to fit as well?)
It isn’t so much that Lilly Pulitzer dresses are going off the preppy radar, it is the opposite — many preppy girls feel that Lilly Pulitzer dresses are the ONLY preppy dresses on the preppy radar. I am simply trying to remind them of the fact that a dress doesn’t have to be Lilly to be preppy.
I want to thank you for asking a mature question and not attacking me. Trust me, it is truly appreciated :) It’s a shame you’re anonymous.
You don't like bow ties or Lilly Pulitzer? You aren't a real preppy. Your last post looks like an Urban Outfitters advertisement. You are more of a trendy hipster that likes to dabble in preppy without really committing to the lifestyle.
I knew this was coming… hahaha
I was raised with the belief that preppy style transcends time. For example, a white fitted lacoste polo is just as relevant to preppy style today as it was back in 1970. As are a navy blue blazer and a pair of loafers. In a year or two Lilly Pullitzer will be out of style whether you like it or not. Madrass everything will also fade into the background. You can read my theory on bowties in my other post.
As for the lifestyle? I’m sorry but do you even know me? I’m pretty sure that growing up in the nations capital, rowing all throughout high school (you do know what rowing is i assume), and being politically knowledgeable make me very much part of the “lifestyle” of which you speak.
Just because I see through trends does not make me a hipster. If anything your willingness to embrace Lilly, Bowties, and Madrass make YOU the hipster.
So I have been holding this in for a while, but I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore. I am sick of bowties. I know I know, call me a bad prep. In my opinion bowties only belong with tuxedos.
Also, straight boys, please don’t complain when us gays hit on you when you’re wearing a bowtie — you know why? BECAUSE BOWTIES MAKE YOU LOOK GAY. Bowties are gay. Bowties are overrated. Bowties make you look like you’re trying too hard.
